This project was sponsored by Hiawatha Valley Partnership with financial assistance by
UM SE Regional Sustainable Development Partnership:
The Experiment in Rural Cooperation.
The purpose of this study is to examine available
spatial data related to the St. Lawrence Formation
to determine its relationship to water quality and
safety for the built environment.
The recent past has seen a significant increase in
development throughout east-central and southeast
Minnesota as people move out from the Twin
Cities metropolitan area seeking the scenic beauty and rural lifestyle of the region. Changes to rural
residential and urban land use place greater pressure
on natural system functions, in particular, the
protection of water quality. Without careful guideance,
these land use changes can also introduce
housing into areas unsuitable for structures leading
to problems such as wet basements.
