Apple Blossom Scenic Drive - 3D Approach to Planning
This research project presented the Center with the opportunity to work with other University of Minnesota units to create an alternative approach to land use decision-making and planning in rural Minnesota. The partnership amongst the Center for Urban and Regional Affairs (CURA), the College of Design (CDes) then the College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (CALA) and its Design Institute, and the Minnesota Land Trust allowed for successful culmination of research ideas and resources on the subject.
This project involved the combination of two existing products for rural organizations within Winona and Houston Counties that are currently faced with decisions involving expansion and development. The first product was architecture graduate student, Song Sun's, housing designs for the Apple Blossom area. The second product was the Center's 3-D model of a section of the Apple Blossom Scenic Drive and surrounding area.
By combining these two products, the Center was able to create 3-D animations that displayed Sun's housing designs. The animations allowed users to view the visual ramifications of various housing designs, affording the opportunity to view different land use alternatives before choosing and implementing any one particular development scheme.
